How to choose the best stunt scooter?
Looking for a scooter may sound easy but in the real sense, there is a very big task that has to be done for you to get what you want. When going to the market, it always easy to make a mistake so you ought to take caution and be sure on what exactly you want. On that note, in the following discussion, we are going to look at some of the important factors to consider when you are getting your kid or yourself the perfect stunt scooter.
a) Wheels
There are a number of wheels and therefore you ought to be sure of the kind of wheel you will purchase. Denser wheels are always the best since they will boost the grip of your scooter. Scooters which have wheels with measurements of 80A and 74A are usually better than any other scooter wheels.
b)Size
The size of your bar is also another important thing to consider. The size of your bar should be the size of waistline so that you can balance while riding on the scooter.
c) Grip Tape.
This is a very important element for any rider. It’s normally used for security purposes to ensure the rider does not slip while riding.
d) Brakes
Brakes are one of the major considerations for any serious rider before buying a scooter. There are normally two types of brakes: the flexing braking system and the spring braking system. Always ensure the scooter you are buying has all the required braking systems.
e) Weight
The nature of a stunt scooter dictates that the scooter ought to be weighty in as much as its functionality is concerned. Research indicates that a stunt scooter should weigh between 4.5kg and 6kg. Although less heavy scooter may be easy for you to handle and manage, they are usually not the best. However, lightweight scooters are cheaper than the bulkier options.
f) Decks
It obvious that most stunt scooters are mostly aimed at kids of about 8 years and above. Therefore, a good scooter deck for your kid should measure 10cm in size and 50cm long. A less size scooter deck is always advantageous to the kids since they can be able to manage and control it in a very effective way.
Maintenance of Your Stunt Scooter
Your stunt scooter does need maintenance. You need to make sure every time you take it for a spin, it’s in top provision so that it performs to the highest and help you do the trick to perfection. Now since these toys are stunt scooter, their maintenance is comparatively easier than their brother, means electric ones.
You need to ensure two types of maintenance for your scooter, one is routine, means checking for small care needed on a regular base, other is after a while if there’s any major change needed for long time use. Let’s break the whole maintenance thing down-
Regular Maintenance
This is the maintenance you need to take before and after every ride. After a ride, check if your scooter got any scratches or frame damages, which can possibly lead towards breakdown. Before every ride, make sure essential compartments of your scooter such as the wheels, bearings, brakes etc. are in perfect condition for action.
- Run a complete inspection of your scooter before taking it to action.
- Check the wheel bearing, are they running smoothly? Is there any grating sound? If yes, you may need to regulate or fix it.
- Check the bolts whether they got loose or not. If yes, tighten them.
- Apply the brakes couple of time. Smooth and confident braking? Fine.
- Also check the footplate, front and back forks, handlebar, and fast release system to make sure they’re in good shape.
- Check if you need to re-apply lubricant to necessary areas.
- Give your scooter a gentle wash and wipe it afterward to make sure no dust stays on it which could harm the color and metal.
Maintenance in Long Run
Your scooter gets some sort of damage for a long time use, especially you’re that guy who likes to go on a spin frequently and pushes your toy to the limit. Some parts get damaged which should be taken care of, replaced or repaired.
- Take your scooter to the mechanic for a checkup after every 6-7 months.
- You might need to replace the wheel bearing which is more likely to get damaged faster.
- The mechanic needs to check the whole braking system very carefully, replace any part if needed, to make it top-notch and work like new.
- Mechanics often take the whole machine apart and check if every little part is fine, which is a good practice.
- Don’t hesitate to spend to replace a part if you have any doubt, won’t be a wise idea in long run.
- Make sure the mechanic don’t forget to put lubricants on the recommended areas by the scooter company.
- You could also give your toy a polish to make it look glossy again.
Some Tricks You Can Do With Your Best Pro Scooter
You’ll definitely want to do some cool tricks with your pro stunt scooter and impress your friends, won’t you? Well, below are some cool and pretty easy to do scooter tricks that you might wanna try. Practice them well.
Bunny Hop
The bunny hop is significant to learn as it is required to do numerous big air tricks through the aid of a ramp or two. It is nothing but making a jump while on the run. First, place your feet firm and resolutely on the deck. After gaining some speed, drag the handlebars up with decent enough force immediately followed by your feet.
The timing is important here. Your feet need to follow the exact timing of you dragging the handlebar. Feet go late, the scooter won’t go up; feet go early, you’ll get no momentum on your hand to drag the handlebar up. So, making sure the timing is perfect by practicing enough.
About the landing, it needs to be as easy and soft possible. Bending the knee is important here. If you can bend the knee to a good limit at the moment of landing, it’ll absorb most of the shock so landing will be soft and easy.
Here’s a video to help you with doing bunny hop. Practice more and more to be perfect at it.
Ollie
The Ollie is pretty similar to the bunny hop, it’s just an advanced version. You need to put the scooter high, similar to bunny hop, just not evenly. When doing an Ollie, the front wheel goes a bit higher than the back wheel. Means, the scooter will be at a vertical angle to the ground.
Put your strongest foot close to the break firmly, and the other one close to the handlebar, a bit softly. Gain some speed, fetch the handlebar along with your front foot, followed by the tail of the scooter and back foot just after a fraction of a second. You can also try turning around a bit while on the jump, after you master it. The landing is same as the bunny hop.
Here’s a video to show you how to do an Ollie properly.
Nollie
A nollie is an ollie, but the vertical angle is different here. In a nollie, the back wheel goes upper that the front one, opposite to an ollie. You need to fetch the scooter up and then push the handlebar down immediately so that the back wheel goes upper. A nollie needs a bit more practice and skill, so master an ollie first, then try nollie.
The earlier video shows you how to do a nollie.
Tail-Whip
Tail whip is a pretty basic yet very popular trick among the scooter geeks. To do a tail whip, you need to master ollie first. You’re not gonna do your normal ordinary bunny hop, you wanna learn how to actually jump, means you need to lean back and jump forward, like an ollie.
Next, you need to know how to scoop your foot, so you can kick the whip to start rotation. Do this with your strongest foot. After that, you need to know how to whip. Have your scooter hold on the air grabbing the handlebar, try to whip the tail so it starts rotating, and keep it going twisting the handlebar.
If you’ve practiced all this, now it’s time to do the trick. Gain a bit of speed, jump just as you do in an ollie, while your back foot is leaving the scooter is in the air, kick the whip in a moderate force so it rotates around 1 time while you’re in the air, then land when the tail has come underneath your foot. The landing timing is important. Try to land at the exact time of the tail reaching underneath your foot, not early, not later. And, remember, you’re not going to get it done on the first attempt, so keep practicing.
I’ll attach a video a bit later on how to do this and coming tricks properly, shown by a pro.
180
The 180 is a pretty easy yet cool trick for a beginner. To do a 180, you’re gonna need to jump at some speed, steer towards left or right as per your strongest side, move 180 degrees while being in the air, then land and keep balance.
Firstly, acquire some speed, then jump and steer. The success secret of doing a 180 properly lies in the jump. What most people do is they jump while they are moving straight. What you wanna do is, steer a bit towards your strong side (the direction you want to spin to) while you’re landed.
Say, you’re a right-hander, so while you’re on the go, move your handlebar towards right about 15-20 degrees, and hold it for a second, so the whole scooter steers a bit towards the right, and then jump. This way you’ll get an extra momentum to twist yourself and the scooter. So, after making the jump as I suggested, twist your body towards the right so it supports the scooter to spin. Then, land safely, bending the knees, absorbing the pressure, and balance yourself so that you don’t fall.
360
The 360 is the 180, just 180 more. This time you’re gonna rotate 360 degrees instead of 180. So you realize that you should try this after you’ve mastered 180, right?
If you’re confident enough that you’re a pro at doing 180, here’s the trick to push it to 360. You just need to twist your body harder and have a bit more speed to get stronger momentum. The jumping technique remains same, just jump at a bit more speed, and while in the air, try snapping around a little bit harder, and tuck your body tighter, like a pencil, so hopefully you’ll be able to rotate 360 degrees.
